A question about divorce in Cuba

by Dave
(Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

What is the cost and procedure for a Cuban still residing in Cuba (has never left) to divorce their foreign spouse if the spouse in question is estranged and will not communicate with them?

Answer by Vic Webmaster Havana-guide.com

Between Cubans residing in Cuba the cost is less than 5 Cuc. For a foreigner to divorce from his Cuban partner in Cuba the cost is approximately
1400 Cuc (peso convertible). There are some uncertainties, is the marriage contract only registered in Cuba? Than the divorce should be made in Cuba. I am not quite sure in this case, but I suppose that because a foreigner is involved the cost will also be approx. 1400 CUC. The procedure in Cuba: in front of a public notary and two witnesses you sign the divorce document. You have to show your Cuban marriage certificate and birth certificate. I strongly recommend to seek the advice of a Cuban lawyer they can give you advice on procedures to divorce
without mutual consent. (see address below).

Divorce in Cuba
by: sdpr-2011

Hi to all,
i was married with a UK woman for 16 years, after my divorce i went to cuba, since a child this was a dream, yes introduced to some jineteres, but no, thanks.
i met a nice lady but we did and not started a relation straight away.
after two years, she has never asked me for money, neither to come out. we just want to spend more time together
i think she is an excellent person, lots of values and qualities that we in this western and developed world, don´t have.
obviously there are the girls and men that want to live the country because of the embargo and the living conditions, but that will be normal.

i live in spain now, but have british nationality.
i organised the turist visa, but it was rejected by Spain, NOT CUBA.

ihave to find other alternative, without getting married, to be with the woman that i love now. i don´t know tomorrow. but the important thing is that NOW she keeps my heart and feelings at the top.

Thanks for the advice about divorce, becuase it is one option that i was thinking, but maybe, becuase of costs and legal things, i will not consider it now.

Don't marry one
by: Anonymous

I made the mistake of marrying a Cuban. He was very attentive but as soon as he came here, gone was the man I married in Cuba. He left in 12 days.

dont marry a cuban
by: Anonymous

reason why.... is he or she is poor and you have money, house or job. the goverment in the uk will look at his/her life since they moved here. and if the marriage does not work out and you decide to divorce it will not go in your favour as you will have to give some money to the cuban person. i have look into this and decided not to marry the cuban man. i have a house which i have paid all of my mortgage on it and savings and the cuban man has no money at all. my solcitor says that i will be worse off if the marriage fails and he can take my assetts which is unfair as he has nothing to offer to me.

i have thought long on hard whether to marry this cuban man i hardly know who i met on holiday. he asked me to marry him as his life will be better in the uk and he can provide for his family from here.

my decision is no i will not marry. please anyone out there wants to consider marriage think long and hard before you do this as if the marriage fails it is you that will lose out and not the other way round. do your research like i have. good luck

Well, I'll count myself as one of the lucky ones then, as ours is a working union. Then again, I'm not 90, and she's not 19.

Uh...right.
by: Anonymous

Well, be that as it may, I'm married to one, and I have no regrets. To state that life is different with a Cuban is somewhat like saying that Mars is a bit too far of a destination for a Sunday afternoon bike ride. I'm well versed in Cuban culture, speak Spanish fluently, and have traveled extensively. I'm asking the question here due to the conflicting information that I've received in regards to the query. I'll be able to sort it out when we return in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for your warnings, but I don't need them.

Foreigner MIA
by: Anonymous

Thank you. Here's the thing. I'm married to a Cuban woman who has resided in Canada for two years. A friend of ours who lives in Holguin married a Canadian man three years ago who has all but disappeared. We can't locate him. So, how does a Cuban go about it when the foreigner is MIA?

Do not marry Cubans if you are a foreigner unless you are prepared to live in Cuba, it is not going to work. They get tired of you very quiclky, whether it is after 10 years or 20 years they will divoce you. Help them if you want to but do not marry them. The excitement of love only last while you are with them, after six months it goes out the door unless you are prepared to live on he edge with every thing you do. Bright lights, music, eating and drinking, music and sex. If you aint prepared to keep up with those things, leave them alone. They are fun loving people, but very few take life serious the way foreigners do. The culture is diffrent and nothing you can do to make it work if you are not living in Cuba.
