ATMs in Havana Cuba?

by Joanna
(Penticton, BC)

Hello,

I'm a Canadian and wonder if there is a Bank of Nova Scotia in Havana and if not are there ATMs for tourists? I have a MasterCard but if may go through an American bank so may not be usable. I will be in Cuba for five weeks this summer. Please advise. Thank you. Joanne Babiak in Penticton, British Columbia, Canada

To my knowledge there's only one Canadian bank in Havana, the National Bank of Canada, address:
3rd Avenue at the corner with 78th street, Miramar district Havana. (tel.+53 7 2043008). There are very few ATMs in Havana, maybe 10-15. At the "CADECA" main office ( Cadeca, is the official Cuban exchange office) in Obispo street Old Havana (near hotel Ambos Mundos) are two ATM's. I once used this machine with my Visa card, I think that there will be no problems with Mastercard too, when your card is issued by your Canadian bank. Ask your bank, many Canadians traveling to Cuba use credit cards. I don't trust ATM's in Cuba, so I always enter the Cadeca or bank, in Cuba I prefer the humans over the machine. My advise take enough cash with you at least for one week, check with your bank if your Mastercard can be used in Cuba, I hear other Canadians in Cuba saying they use preloaded creditcards, it seems to be cheaper (check with your bank in Canada)

Scotia Bank
by: Anonymous

Scotia Bank is my Bank. The debit card does not work in an ATM, and the new ones no longer have your name embossed on it. So they no longer work at a Bank counter in person, either. The teller cannot process the card without a name to check against your passport.

But my pre-paid debit card from Money Mart works fine at the banks over the counter, except once when a teller mistakenly told me they weren't accepted in Cuba since it was a MasterCard (but she was mistaken), and it also worked at the CADECA in the tourist hotels, for example on Prado.

Neither one works at the local cuban ATM which cubans use for their own bank accounts.

My suggestion would be to get a credit card from CIBC and put $$$ on it before you go. Cheaper and way easier...that way you wont be carring wads of cash with you. Happy travels.
