boat from Cancun to Cuba

by Jerald
(Vancouver, BC, Canada)

I will be spending some time in Cancun next month and was curious as to whether or not there is a ferry service between Cancun and Cuba for I would like to visit Cuba while I'm in the area.

I heard there are no boats going to or from Cancun and Cuba. Would it be possible to rent a boat and make the trip by my self?

Answer: by Vic webmaster Havana-guide.com

There is NO regular boat connection between Cancun and Cuba. The existence of (non existing) ferry boats leaving Cuba was an urban legend and joke circulating among Cuban circles that wish to leave (illegally) the country.

Theoretically you should be able to rent a boat in Cancun and dock in the Marina Hemingway near Havana but I should not advise to do this. Consider this: the cost of renting a boat, including fuel, docking costs in Havana, customs regulations and inspections of the boat, you will probably lose a lot of time (and money) on a short trip. There is a huge control of coast guards too in search for drugs and human trafficking on the sea.
It is an excellent idea to visit Havana while you are in Cancun, but do it the easy way....buy a plane ticket Cancun-Havana. At Havana airport you can buy a tourist visa (tarjeta tourista) valid for 30 days (cost 25 cuc about 28 USD) The total cost will be a lot cheaper than a boat 'expedition'. Have a nice trip!

I am interested in renting a boat in Cancun for a little over a week while traveling in Cuba. How would I go about doing that? I've heard it done before.

I have done this trip on various ocasions with my own yacht and have NEVER encountered any problems with US coast guards NOR with Cuban authorities. It is a very nice trip and worth doing.
