Brainwashed in Cuba

by Victor
(Canada)

Here are some sure signs that you have met a jinetera or jinetero. I'm speaking from experience, I married one.
The first and most obvious sign is that they are reluctant to talk about their past. When they do, they are vague. You get the impression they never had a life.
They will tell you they only had 1 or 2 relationships. That's a lie because Cubans are very proud of their sexual openness, and not ashamed to have sex with someone they just met,,,,Cuban or tourist.
Also, if you meet any family they will be vague about her. My wife's sister acted like she didn't know her own sister. When you ask a simple question and don't get an answer,it's because they don't know what she told you, and they don't want to contradict her, or him.
Next sign, watch for contradictions. They tell so many lies, they can't remember what they said.
Another sign,, pay attention to when they keep their distance from you. In private they will be all over you. In public she will let go of your hand, walk behind you or in front, and even just pull away. All for no seemingly good reason. Moments later, she is back together with you.
What happened is she saw one of her lovers, or a undercover cop that knows her. You have to remember they have Cuban lovers when you go back home.
Here is another sign, you will have Crazy , Wonderful Sex, TOO MUCH. Don't get me wrong, I like sex and I like crazy sex, but in a normal relationship people are also interested in each other. They talk about small stuff, anything and everything. When someone really loves you, they are interested in you. A jinetera makes sex the most important thing. Lots of sex and no talking. You fall in love, and they have a chance to get out of the country.
My advice, don't get to drunk, keep a clear head so you can spot these signs. Get your lover drunk so they start making mistakes, contradictions.
That's how I smartened up, my wife made most of her mistakes when she was drinking. Small slips when talking and having sex.

Good advice from Victor! To know your partner takes time, that's one of the most common mistakes foreigners make. I would also like to add, test your partner frequently, for example, leave your wallet on the table with money, not much but enough to be tempting for her, many small banknotes. Does she asks all the time for expensive stuff, a cellphone, expensive clothing etc.? She surely is trying to squeeze as much money out of you as possible. If she can only offer sex, she's probably a jinetera, as explained correctly by Victor in his message above.
This is not intended to blame the Cubans, similar things happen in many other countries. Poverty can do bad things to good people.

all about the money
by: katie

I get exactly what you are saying. My dad married one who was 27 years younger than him and we had to watch as she drained all his assets to her family and repeatedly told him that he did not love her if he did not give her money or buy her things. Now he is dead and she appeared on the doorstep with her hand out, wanting only what could be pawned or sold on the black market and has been seen around town already holding hands with her next victim who, of course is much older. Despicable.

That happened to me when I went into Varadero with my Cuban lover. He walked ahead of me and I fully commented on it.
Ill be staying at his place in November....looking forward to connecting the dots.

for Mary H.
by: Victor

Mary... I agree with you.
I'm telling people how to be careful. I'm NOT saying bad things about ALL Cabans. I know many very , very Honest and nice Cuban people. I have been there many times and I continue to go back. I love the country, and the friends I have made there.
What I wrote is " Warning Signs " about people who are not Genuine or Sincere.
Some tourists, REALLY DO FALL IN LOVE.
Not everyone goes there for sex.
I know you want to defend your people, I feel sorry for them myself and I always am defending them. However, the truth is the truth.

Are you kidding me?
by: Mary H.

My goodness!!!I landed in this website looking for a way to get a Cuban email address and started reading the "love-scam" stories described here by grown-ups acting like crying babies lacking the experience and wisdom that should come with age. You are so detached and so afraid of human contact in your own society that you go to a poor country and find someone who smile at you and you believe it is love. It is not that they are deceiving you. The problem is that you are dying for a caress, a hug, something you are so scared of giving each other in the first world countries. Don't blame poor people for taking what is offered. I am a Cuban woman married to a Cuban man who had the luck and the opportunity of immigrate to Canada as skill workers. I have also stories of foreign guys (tourists) trying to buy me a long time ago when I still lived in Cuba without me being a hooker (as my mother raise me I am and always will be poor but honest), I used to work in the tourist circuit (La Rampa and Old Havana) and also was friends with someone who rented her house. Being treated as something you can buy was disgusting and very offensive, but for them they were doing me a favor since they believed all the Cuban girls were for sale.
My husband and I are both professionals and we worked here in Canada since day 1 as janitors and factory labors until finally a couple of years ago (we have been here for almost 7 years) we started working in our career field. And still amazed me seeing Canadian born homeless asking me for change in the streets of Toronto. And the organized strippers who show some skin (no touching) for a huge amount you gladly pay. So, my darlings, we are all human beings, struggling one way or another to keep going. Like the lyrics of the song says: some of them want to use me, some of them want to be used by me...
Before judging look at yourselves in the mirror and ask if you are free of blame...you have your share of responsibility. Be sure about that.

Some Signs To Spot If You're Having Doubts.
by: Anonymous

People should heed Vic's excellent advice, his words of wisdom will save you from much a heapload of heartache and iminent financial disaster.

Long distance romance can rarely work. They are incapable of fidelity for a start, and you will be expected to finance their lazy lifesyle since you have been appointed as his 'Mujer'.

If you fall for this B.S you are for sure being taken for a fool and taken to the cleaners.

Learn Spanish this is the only way to know what they really are saying, thinking about you.

Strike up a friendship with the landlady of a casa close by to where he/she lives.

Buy the casa landlady a present, she will then dish the dirt. Big Time.

She knows more about him than his own mother.

He may have even dated her daughter, niece.

She will sing like a canary if you give her a bottle of perfume, rum.

You will be given the low down on his many illegitmate children, various Cuban amigas/compadres, etc. etc...

She will know if the State is chasing him for unpaid maintenance for his many illegitimate children.

Slip her 10 CUC and she will monitor his late night manouvers on her cellphone camera.

Her daughter/niece will capture him in a clinch with a blonde Swede tourist at the local disco or casa del a trova.

Believe me ladies this works.

Save yourself a heap of stress by having him followed.

It costs little but saves you a fortune and a lifetime of heartache and regret.

Only by doing a little detective work will you find out the reality of your Romeo and know if he is really taking you to the cleaners, having a laugh at your expense.

They are also very fickle.
by: Amanda

Victor I agree with all that you wrote. Cubans can be so convincing, as other have pointed out they would win an Oscar for the lies they spin you while keeping a straight face.

As a race they are tactile, and to have this beautiful warm people hug and cuddle you while whispering words of love in your ear can be very romantic.

But I would say as you have done, please keep a sense of logic, do not allow them to get you tipsy by filling up your glass. They use this trick to get you to agree to what you would never agree to when sober. Agreeing to handing over your cellphone, trainers, clothing, a ticket /visa to Canada, Europe, etc.

They will change like the seasons. The man/woman you met a year ago will never be the same as when you return.

History has happened in that year, relationships will have started up with Cubans and estranjeras alike and have ended.

You're just another string in their bow to be used, manipulated spun along for now.

I may sound cynical but better be wary than to be used, taken to cleaners and hung out to dry.

Protect yourself, and in these economically shaky days protect your assets. You will lose your heart, but don't loose your head to a Cuban.

good people trying to survive
by: victor

I wrote the above letter and I want to add to Vic's comment. Poverty does do bad things to GOOD People... The real sad thing is that they can't change. They are programed from early childhood. You have to remember that anyone under 50,, grew up in present day Cuba.
Present day Cuba doesn't offer a Bright future to the average Cuban. Anything worth getting is priced in CUC,,, so, people do what ever they must to get the money..
I love Cuba, I love the people,, I know some very nice, very Honest Cubans. Even my wife,,, who started out scamming me, using me. She is a wonderful, loving women. All she ever wanted was for someone to REALLY love her. Because,,, Cubans, cheat each other, and their spouses,,Not just the Tourists
