Can I use credit cards in Cuba?

by Rossanna
(PerĂº)

I have a Visa credit card of the Scotiabank, can I use it in your country??? Thanks.

ANSWER by Vic webmaster
The Scotiabank is a Canadian bank, consequently your Visa card is not issued by a US bank and can be used in Cuba. Only Visa cards issued by a US bank are blocked in Cuba. You can use your Visa card to withdraw and exchange money in a Cuban bank or Cadeca (offical State exchange office) Ask your bank if they can preload the visacard, this way your card can be used as a debitcard. (Cheaper)
You can not use the Visa card to pay in shops, restaurants etc. there are almost no pay terminals in Cuba except in banks and some major tourist hotels. In Cuba cash is king, take enough cash with you for the first days of your stay. Do not use US dollars, there is a extra 10% tax on US dollar transactions, use Euro, Canadian dollars or Pound Sterling.
Have a nice trip!
