Can I withdraw money from ATM's in Cuba ?

If I go into a bank and present my visa credit/debit card (issued in uk) can I withdraw any amount of CUC's.

ANSWER by Vic, Webmaster Havana-guide.com

Yes, as a British citizen with a Visa creditcard issued in the UK you can withdraw money from ATM's and banks in Cuba...BUT I do not recommend the use of ATM's in Cuba for several reasons.

  • 1) There are very few ATM's in Havana,
and you can forget the use of ATM's and creditcards on the countryside or in small villages. In Cuba cash is King.
  • 2) What in case your cards is swallowed or blocked in the machine? In Cuba I always go inside a bank or Cadeca (Official State owned exchange offices) and talk to a "live" teller/operator. Keep an eye on your creditcard, and do not tolerate that they go to another room with your card.
  • 3) Always ask for a receipt, collect them all and check your account's later at home.
Some tourists have reported that their creditcard was copied and money was withdrawn in Miami.
I am not sure if this is true, but fact is that the safety measures are less sophisticated than in Europe, they still use a signature combined with the magnetic strip on the card.
In a bank you can withdraw as much as your card limit allows, however I recommend to withdraw no more than 1000 or 1500 Pound Sterling at a time, huge amouts of cash represent always a risk. Notice that for most Cubans 1000£ equals more than three years salary!
Notice also that the money withdrawal is expensive, there are transaction costs in Cuba and in the UK. A good option is to preload your creditcard in the UK to lower the transaction costs, consult your bank.
One last advice, avoid using creditcards in hotels, car rentals etc. for safety reasons, always go to a bank to withdraw money.
