Converting dollars to CUCs in Varadero

Money in Cuba

Where in Varadero will I be able to convert U.S. dollars to CUCs?

ANSWER by Vic Webmaster Havana-guide.com

First this advise AVOID the exchange of U.S.Dollars in Cuba because there is a tax of 10% on the exchange of US dollars.
Your 100 USD dollars will be considered as 90 dollars before the exchange!
This is done to discourage the import of US dollars.
Exchange your US dollars abroad (in Costa Rica) for Euro's or Canadian dollars!

You can exchange money in the CADECA (official Cuban money exchange office) at Varadero airport (Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport). My advice, always count your money and ask for a receipt!
You can also go to a bank, never exchange money on the streets (counterfeit banknotes)

Banks in Varadero

  • Banco Financiero International
Primera Avenida (First Avenue) between 32nd and 33th street
  • Banco Crédito y Comercio
Avenida 1 (First Avenue) between 35th and 36th street

Get Euros for your USD before you go. When you exchange your EUROs for CUCs, pay attention!!!!!
I had one bank teller try to rip me off 3 times in one transaction. :)))))) Most Cubans are lovely people. One other person in our party did get ripped off for $100 in a bank transaction. Know what you're doing and pay attention! Other than that experience, which I took with a grain of salt, my time in Cuba was glorious - Viva La Habana!!!

Sound advise, always ask a receipt and count your money. The Cadeca at the Varadero airport is notorious for shortchanging! In the big banks and Cadecas in Havana there's more control and cameras too. Pay also attention in exchange in hotels
