Cuba Earthquake
Most seismic events in Cuba pass unnoticed or are of low impact,
70% of all seismic activity occurs in the Eastern provinces of the country. In the past
most earthquakes had their epicenter around
Santiago de Cuba with a magnitude
ranging from 5.8 to 7.6 on the Richter scale.
One of the most destructive earthquakes struck the city on August 1852 with an
intensity of 9 on the MSK scale.
Note: The magnitude of an earthquake is a measure of its size, the intensity
is an indication of the intensity of the shaking.
The first earthquake in Cuba was recorded in 1578 by the Spanish conquerors. Throughout
the
Cuban history 28 major earthquakes were logged.
Large earthquakes occur in the region of the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica and
Puerto Rico due to the Barlett - Caiman fault zone (Caribbean - North American plate
boundary.

Cuban Earthquakes 2010
During the year 2010 two earthquakes were reported. One with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale near the Eastern town Baracoa, no injuries or major damage was reported.
On march 10 2010, ACN, the Cuban News Agency reported an earthquake in the Santiago de Cuba province at local time 6.05 am, the trembling was felt across the city of Santiago de Cuba.
