Renewable Energy in Cuba
Biofuel
The Cuban energy company Zerus has signed an agreement with the British Havana
Energy Co, to build biomass plants in the country.
This pilot project is a Cuban effort to diversify and decentralize the energy production
in the country, but there's also opposition in Cuba to the use of agriculture land for
biofuel production.
Fidel Castro wrote in a recent article (January 19 2011) in
Juventud Rebelde (a publication of the Cuban Communist Youth)
"The world
has to choose between food production and production of biofuels.
When millions of tons of corn, soy and sugarcane are used to produce biofuels, the prices
of the daily nutrients will inevitable increase in a world with millions of hungry people".
Fidel Castro concludes with the words: much time is wasted, now it's time to act!
Solar Collectors
In the Ciego de Avila province 450 solar water boilers were installed, half of the quantity
during the year 2010.
Photovoltaic Systems
Cuba has a high solar radiation througout the year, this allows the use of photovoltaic
systems. Many small systems consisting of two 40 Watt panels and a 150 Amph battery
were installed in rural areas.
The hydroelectric installations of Florencia have produced 406 MegaWatt Hr in 2010
before they were affected by drought.
Wind Power
This is the conversion of wind energy into electrical power by means of wind turbines.
Eight hundred small wind turbines were installed in remote rural areas to provide animals
with water.
The British company Havana Energy is working together with the Cuban Ministry of
Basic Industries to develop a 30 Mega Watt wind farm.
