Cuban Customs

CUBAN CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATION

Tourists entering Cuba need a tourist visa (tarjeta tourista) and an international passport valid for at least 6 months after departure. The tourist visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended to 60 days. After 60 days the tourist has to leave the country. Other Cuban visas

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

Effective from May 1, 2010 the tourists entering Cuba have to show a medical insurance document valid for the duration of their stay in Cuba and the insurance has to be accepted by the Cuban authorities! Import Regulations

A summary of Cuban Customs regulations and legislation

PROHIBITED ARTICLES

The import of following items is strictly prohibited
  • Drugs and narcotics
  • Fire arms and explosives
  • Pornographic publications
  • Endangered species of wild fauna and flora
  • Electrical and electronic equipment, including electrical cookers, airco's, ovens, water heaters (resistance) bread toasters (detailed list: check website Cuban Customs)
  • Wireless communication equipment, satellite phones, walkie-talkies, wireless telephone sets, GPS (Global position system) (a cell phone is allowed)
  • Fresh food, fruit, meat etc., seeds and plants

    REGULATED ARTICLES

  • Each tourist has the right to import goods less than 50 USD in value. Above this limit a import tax must be paid. ( check detailed list - Cuban import duties)

    ALLOWED IMPORTS FOR TOURISTS

    Tourists can enter personal items provided that they are exported back after their stay in the country. Personal items include: photo camera, video camera, laptop computer, cell phone, fishing gear, bicycle, personal clothing and toiletries.
  • Cash - import of foreign money is allowed up to 5000 USD. When importing more cash the tourist has to fill out a Customs Declaration.
  • The import of max 3 bottles of alcoholic beverages and max 200 cigarettes is allowed.
  • The import of animals (dog, cat etc) is subject to inspection and autorization.
  • The import of medicines in the original package is allowed to a max weight of 10 kg

    Export Regulations

  • The exportation of Cuban handmade cigars for quantities exceeding 50 pieces is allowed with the invoice from an official cigar shop where the cigars were purchased.
  • It is forbidden to export National Heritage Works with museum value such as books, manuscripts, art pieces etc.
  • Cash - It is forbidden to export more than 5000 USD or 200 CUC
  • Paintings sold in galleries or on street markets need a seal or certificate for exportation.

    WARNING For U.S. Citizens

    It is forbidden for US citizens to travel to Cuba without an OFAC license. Check the OFAC regulations. US citizens traveling to Cuba are not allowed to import items in the US bought in Cuba such as Cuban cigars or rum etc.
