The Cuban Jews Community in Havana
It took Moses 40 years to guide the early Hebrews out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land according to the Bible – about the same amount of time it has taken Cuba’s small Jewish population to get back on its feet under Communist rule. The community of 1500 is rebuilding itself, after it was depleted by departures since Fidel Castro seized power in 1959.
In 1965 there were about 2500 Jews in Cuba and five
synagogues still functioning.
Although the regime respected its Jewish citizens in the nineties the great majority emmigrated, mostly to the United States. Today nearly a thousand Jews live in Havana
