Cuban Rumba
Cuban Rumba
Rumba is a ballroom dance of Afro-Cuban folk-dance origin that became internationally popular in the
early 20th century. Best known for the dancers’ delicate side-to-side hip movements with the upper
body erect, the rumba is danced with a basic pattern of two quick side steps and a slow forward step.
Three steps are executed to each bar. The music, in 4/4 time, has an insistent syncopation.
Boogalu
The sound of Latin youth in and around New York during the mid- to late-60’s, Boogalu was an
Anglicized form of Latin music integrating R&B, mambo and rock & roll, among other forms.
Two top 20 getaway hits in 1963 – “Watermelon Man” by Mongo Santamaria and “El Watusi”
by Ray Barretto – helped birth the style. Latin veterans like Tito Puente and Perez Prado did
boogalus as well and young artists like Joe Bataan, Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers, the Latinaires,
the Latin Souls, and the Lat-Teens burst onto the scene around that time.
