The tropical island is a real scuba diving paradise, with thousands of kilometres coastline and beautiful beaches with cristal clear water. Divers find a variety of colorful coral reefs, sponges, underwater caves, amazing shipwrecks and abundant marine life such as baracuda's, bonitos, turtles and sharks.
There are many diving spots, the major centers are:
Varadero located on the peninsula de Hicacos is a Cuban resort well known for its all-in "fun and sun" tourism. Besides the "party tourism" Varadero also invites the diving and watersports lovers. Snorkling equipment is available at most hotels and diving clubs
Three important centers in Varadero are Acua Sports, where you can rent equipment, jetski's and catamarans.
Centro Internacional de Buceo Barracuda offers international recognized courses and teaches beginners too.
Marina Varadero Gaviota offers complete diving facilities and initiation cources.
This smaller beach resort offers abundant diving possibilities with five sites: Las Mantas, El Canyon, Mortera, Las Amforas, Poseidon. The local "Sharks Friends Diving Cuba Center" offers trips and equipment.
The small resort Maria La Gorda (Fat Mary) in Western Pinar del Rio is probably the finest dive location on the Cuban island. In its calm and cristal clear waters, divers can spot the remains of Spanish ship wrecks, discover under water caves and colorful coral reefs. Maria La Gorda is one of the best protected environmental areas on the island.
La Aguja International Diving Center, located at the Marina Hemingway tourist center offers a complete range of diving equipment and facilities.
Other locations include, Guardalavaca, Cienfuegos, Jardines del Rey.
There are many sharks in the Cuban waters, probably because of well-preserved environment. In most popular tourist resorts like Varadero most beaches have spotters and safety guards. You can safely enjoy the underwater diving.
When you really want to see sharks in action, always dive with an experienced and official instructor, even then the encounter with sharks is not without risks as you can see on the videos.
