Divorce in Cuba I need help!

I am legally married to a cuban national (I am Canadian and live in Canada). I will be returning to the country this January to see some friends (not my ex. My marriage has not been translated into english and it is not legal in Canada.... will I have any problems going through customs when entering the country as I will be travelling with my boyfriend!! Thanks for any help!!!

Probably you will not encounter problems, but without a "Cuban divorce" you are still married to your Cuban. The translation into English has nothing to do with the validity of the marriage. I am no lawyer, so DON'T TAKE THIS AS LEGAL ADVICE, but I think that the best practice is to file for a divorce in Cuba, to avoid future problems. The divorce procedure in Cuba is fast and simple. The best practice is to consult a Cuban lawyer, there seems to be an easy unilateral procedure for a divorce in Cuba, ask your Cuban lawyer!

Divorce...
by: Anonymous

God, I hope you mean THIS January. Some of these websites have questions posted from 5 years ago and yours is not dated. Anyway...DON'T WORRY. If I'm understanding your question correctly you just want to know if you'll be under scrutiny from the customs agents (Aduanas) upon entering Cuba. No. Unless your husband has committed a crime in the past there or you're on a terrorist watch list...they don't KNOW who you or nor do they care. Especially a Canadian.

Don't volunteer any information. If you're visiting friends, just answer the question. They might ask you how many times you've been there before. They seem to only have a record of past year. So if you've been there twice just tell them so. They don't have to hear anything about your marriage.

Once you get passed the preliminary agent you'll grab your bags and you might be subject to bag inspection. If you're going there with a bunch of divorce documents, put them discreetly with books and journals. Many of these young Aduanas can't read English and they sometimes assume it might be propaganda or some other "threat" to the Revolution. They get brownie-points for finding these things. Usually, pasty white Canadians don't get bothered as much as those who LOOK like they might be Cuban. Your bags are x-rayed and if they see electronics or unusual devices (DVD players or tape recorders for example) or even things like bags of coffee will trigger an inspection (they think it might be cocaine).

However, if they do ask what the documents are there's no reason to LIE about it. This will not prevent you from entering Cuba. At this point, the only thing they care about is whether these documents are what you say they are. Good luck! I will be arriving from Mexico for New Years. Cuban's LOVE New Years!
