divorcing a Cuban

by meredita
(south western Ont)

Best thing I could have ever done....well I guess not marrying him ...would have been the best thing...anyone even thinking about marrying a Cuban should run in the other direction as fast as you can. Nice country to visit but leave the Cubans there as they have no clue what to do or how to act once they get here. Save your money and go to Argentina where the people are beautiful inside and out...and not so desperate..in all ways.

getting the divorce
by: Anonymous

I suggest you bite the bullet and go see a family divorce lawyer ...cost me $1,200.00 do it now while you know where he is that way you won't have to pay for a P.I to find him ...to give him the divorce papers. I do not believe there are many cubans who will fight this as they do not like the Police or Immigration to know what they are up to and the fact they won't spend any of their $$$$$. No judge is going to give a person 1/2 of anothers belongings especially when they have not contributed to any of it.
Good luck ...just get the divorce filed as soon as possible and make sure to write Immigration and send his passport # and photo and let them know you are no longer willing to be involved and that the marriage is over....You must be apart for a year to apply for the divorce.

What was the process?
by: Got Out

Hi ... I'm wondering what the process was you went through to get your divorce from your Cuban husband?

My sponsorship was never finalized and he never came to Canada. Now I'm trying to figure out what the next step is ... do you have any advice?

Quit while you're ahead
by: Got Out

Hi ... I just finished Withdrawing my Application for Sponsorship to bring my Cuban husband to Canada. We had been together for 2 1/2 years and married for just over 1yr. He's not necessarily a really bad person, I just felt the same as you and knew in my gut that it wasn't going to turn out good. When I finalized the papers, there was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders and I knew that I had made the right decision. Sure enough once I started to let him know I was not going to go through with the papers all of a sudden I was a 'horrible cold hearted person who never cared about him or his family' After telling me how horrible I was for 3/4's of a page of email he then proceeded to BEG me to not stop the process and get him out of Cuba. If we as Canadians didn't have so much riding on sponsoring them - 3 years of total responsibility - it might be different, but this is YOUR life and money on the line ... just think about it that way. Chalk it up to life lessons and follow your gut and your heart it will always lead you in the right direction.

Whats the process
by: Anonymous

Hi, I'm caught in a rough spot. I also married a cuban, and things are not going as well as i thought they would have. My sponsorship is still not over, and I'm afraid he'll put me into financial difficulty. I have consulted with a family lawyer, but was wondering if you have any insight on the divorce process. Please help
