dogs to cuba - Traveling with my dog to Cuba

by marisela
(miami)

I would like to take a dog to cuba as a gift. Is this possible? what would I need to do?

ANSWER by Vic Webmaster Havana-guide.com
Yes, it's possible but not easy. First you have to check if your airline company allows the transport of animals on your flight. Some companies do not transport animals.
Then you need an official veterinary certification (International accepted document) that your dog is vaccinated against Rabies. This certification must be valid and issued in the country of origin. On arrival at the Cuban airport you need
to approach the Cuban customs and immigration service to declare your dog. The dog will be subject of an inspection by the Cuban Veterinary inspection and in some cases they can decide that the dog should be hold in quarantine for a few weeks. So when you take in account the total costs, transport, veterinary certificate, customs inspection etc. it can become an expensive gift. Consider the possibility of buying a dog in Cuba to avoid all possible problems of the import.
In Old Havana halfway Obispo street is a dog shop and a bit further a small street market where they sell birds and dogs.
Good Luck!

Please don't bring anymore dogs into Cuba!
by: Anonymous

Please please don't buy a dog and bring it to Cuba. there are so many sad dogs that need homes. Invest your money in taking one of these little hungry ones off the street and pay for it's food and care instead. All I hear us cubans telling me how they have no money no food ... A dog is the last thing you should be giving anyone.

BUY? Are you KIDDING??
by: Jet-setter

There are so many dogs who need help in Cuba, how could anyone suggest buying one?

I have two dogs from La Habana, one of which is small enough to travel with me in the aircraft cabin. She lives in Miami now but I travel with her often. She has seen more geography than Cristobal Colon y Marco Polo juntos! I couldn't think of anyone ever wanting to "buy" her, as she, and all of the street dogs who need help in Cuba, are simply priceless... Why go looking (and paying) for something that, if you let it, will literally jump into your lap?
