Fake Cuban Cigars
Counterfeit Cuban Cigars
The best cigars are made in Cuba but the worst too.
There is a flourishing trade in fake Cuban cigars. Cubans named
jineteros, in Cuban slang, hanging around cigar shops and tourist bars try to sell counterfeit cigars to tourists. Their stories are very similar, the conversation usually starts with the question: Hola, where are you from? From Canada? Well I have a friend in Canada....my father (brother, sister, etc.) works in a cigar factory and can buy cigars at a cheap price....
It's good to know that 99.9% of the cigars sold on the streets are fakes. Period. Even with false or stolen certificates and original boxes. A box of 25 counterfeit MonteCristo cigars sells for 25 Cuc (28 USD) on the streets. Most of these counterfeit cigars taste bad because they are made of tobacco waste and banana leaves. There is a strict police control in the Cuban tourist areas and any Cuban caught on the street with a box of cigars risks prison sentence. More about
Fake Cohiba cigars
The real Cuban cigars are only sold in the Official Cuban State shops called "Casa del Habano" and in official cigar shops at the tourist hotels or at the duty free shops in the Cuban airports.
