for the public about Cuba

by Alex
(canada)

Hi everyone, wow this site is packed with failed relationships. I wish there was a Cuban citizens forum to hear there side of the story. Considering this is mainly people from vacation.

Written by a born Canadian and well travelled on mission work. And I to am guilty and sorry to Cuba and its trying sweet honest people.

Victor, I wish to hear your input. From you living there, wife there.

I myself have spoken to a few Cuban people here in Canada, and they shared there experiences of wedding a foreigner to culture, climate, and personality shock.

Some tell me when the foreigner chooses to stay in Cuba for 5 years things seemed blissful. Later the other mate decides to live in Canada on a trustworthy notion of getting to know the others family and friends in there own environment. After a short time, the visiting spouse feels neglected from there so called love. The mate no longer has time for the other and is completely into the Canadian friendships. The other is left debating a future of loneliness in a strange land without there own family and friends.

This is a shame. Where are the Cuban peoples complaints and stories. Reading only forums like these are almost judgmental on a secluded nation and culture. We cannot embrace a culture looking through the fear of dishonest and a oppurtuntist mentality of superiority.

I think that its not fair. Hence why there are so many failed relationships. I am a transgressor of that mentality and I'm admitting it, to clearly be able to embrace the Cuban culture I have to look through humbled glasses. We as Canadians, foreigners tend to act or hide our mind sets to seem like there is no problem when that is a sitcom on its own. Whereas Cuban people are more humbled in there accomplishments and situation, hence hiding less. It is a lesson learned from "all of us" to deceive and fool eachother because many of us fool ourselves. None of us are better then each other.
Just a thought vic webmaster.

If you're in a city without a ride of your own and need to get somewhere, calling a taxi is probably one of your first thoughts. However, a chauffeured car can offer better service at a comparable price.

Questioning why travelers who book directly with travel operators still often pay the full retail price and not a wholesale or outlet price. The proliferation of 'factory outlets' or 'manufacturer-direct' prices has become common place, but are we getting true 'outlet or direct' prices?

Don't Let Your Heart Rule Your Head NEW
by: Craig

The last post offered common sense about not falling in love. However Cuban men and women the most educated in the world, are specialists/experts in the art of the con, the scam, of making you believe they 'love' you.

Most of them are after your cash, a means to feed their families. Most are already married or with a Cuban partner but they are experts at making you believe you are the only one.

Cuba prides itself at kicking out the Americans and all the sleaze and prostitution that were part of the Batista regime. But prostitution is part of every day life in Cuba, none more so than in the hotel resorts all over the island where young Cuban women are telling old codgers that they love them, they are the only one'.

A small hotel which we recently visitied had an onsite doctor to treat these young women. A very smart move because prostitution at this small hotel was. The same local girls were turning over elderly Canadian men faster than they changed their underwear, and could win an Oscar for the performance they made in their apparent dedication to these elderly men who had paid for their week's stay at this small hotel in Rafael Freyes.

We never once saw the manager of the hotel and staff seemed to do pretty much as they liked. Most were very helpful and efficient. But receptionists did as they pleased.

One evening at around 8pm we saw a boy of around 13 years calling a room, hehad been put through by the receptionist who called the room of the middle aged single Canadian man who had invited the boy.

We felt this was not right, so we alerted the security man who followed the boy and later escorted the boy out of the hotel whole the receptionist feeling guilty knelt beneath the counter and made a muffled call to the boy's mother.

This type of sleazy behaviour is tainting Cuba and it's reputation. It's also effecting it's image as a tourism destination.

Sure it's responsible to have an onsite doctor who will give free penicillan jabs to the local working girls. But is this a hotel that you would want to take your family to? I do not think so.

At the same hotel the resident 'animacion' woman did more hooking with male guests than 'animating' which was non existent.

She disappeared down the beach one night with a Canadian man who told us she fed him the usual line about wanting to 'have his babies' wanted him to build her a house and preferred him 'when he was drunk'. Why would any man in his right mind have anything to do with a hooker like her if he was sober?.

Cuba needs to clean up it's act in terms of tourism. Instead of relying on the sleazier end of the market where elderly men fly in to sleep with local prostitutes for a week and obese women flock there for a week with a hotel gigolo, they need to put measures in place to clean up their tourism because right now it has become tainted with the label of a 'Sex Tourism' destination and Cuba deserves better, so much better.

The reality
by: Anonymous

Hello...Iv'e spent some time in different areas in Cuba and would like to say, common sense would tell you,in there economy, where they're barely surviving, they see tourist as walking wallets. You should always keep your head up for being scammed. As far as romance-3 rules-Don't believe what they say-Don't fall in love-Remember the first two rules!!!If your approached and they speak english,99percent-they want from you.Once cubans realize your not being scammed, you can meet some very nice and hospitable people. You could hardly blame them for trying to get ahead.Spending a small amount and attempting to speak with them goes a long way to making friends.Cuba is truly the safest for going south.

The Scammers Are Inside Cuba Believe Me!
by: Anonymous

To the last PR rep. from the Cuban Governemtn/Tourism Authority.....

For Sure there are scammers who now live in Canada, Europe etc. who conned their way out via an older fat woman or man.

But you cannot claim there are 'No Scammers' in Jamaica today.

Talk to any tourist who's been hassled, any woman who's been conned out of her money, belongings, life savings a few years later and she will refute your claims.

Believe me Cubans are the smartest most educated con men in the Caribbean, if not the world today.

Decades before the 'Arab Spring' the Cubans were at it. They had a head start over the Tunisians the Gyptians, Algerians. Cubans are the masters at Scamming.

They have a Master's Degree in Scammery and Con.

Best Way To Enjoy Hassle Free Cuba - Avoid The Men!
by: Anonymous

I agree with Margaret there are some genuinely nice people in Cuba who are not out to scam you for money, clothing, cellphones or the chance of a visa out.

The way to explore Cuba and enjoy a hassle free holiday is to ignore all the advances from Cuban con men.

I travelled all over Cuba by bus, staying in casa particulars in beautiful Trinidad where the family invited me to a picnic at the local beach.A wonderful day out.

The owner of the casa in Holguin could not do enough for me. She cooked like a superchef, invited me to a weekend Mother's Day celebration with her extended family in their garden where we danced, drank Mohitos and partied for two days.

I received a warm welcome in Baracoa where the lady of the casa was the most wonderful cook and told me about the best places to visit in the area, such as the natural park and local beauty spots.

I had the most wonderful vacation, hassle free, stress free, scam free.

But then I did not travel there to get laid, or on some desperate quest for 'romance'.

Take my advice avoid the men and you will avoid the stress and the scams, and you will have the best time in Cuba.
