Havana University and
New York University

Havana University:
New York University offers its students the rare opportunity to study and stay in the intriguing Cuban capital, legally off-limits to American tourists. NYU in Havana is intended for students with highly developed Spanish ability, and who are at ease with lectures conducted in that language. The program includes excursions to sites of cultural and historic interest, including the Museum of the Revolution, Old Havana, and the Fortress of El Morro.

NYU is fully licensed under the US Department of the Treasury to operate an academic program in Cuba. NYU in Havana’s main affiliation is with the Centro Juan Marinello.

Two courses, Performance in Cuban Literature and Culture, and Topics in Latin American and Caribbean History, are based at the Centro, a 20-minute walk or a 10-minute bus ride from the hotel. The course Visual Culture in Havana is held both at the Ludwig Foundation and in the field at sites around the city of Havana. Students stay at the Hotel Vedado, in the lively area of La Rampa, near Havana University.

Havana University Student Enrolment Increases The number of university students in Cuba increased to around 325,000 in the academic year 2004-05. Students studying in Cuban universities and colleges had reached a record of 310,000 in 1986. The figure dropped to around 73,000 in the 1990s and has risen again in recent years. All schooling in Cuba, including higher education, is free of charge. In addition to developing education in the country, Cuba also helps many countries in personnel training. At present, nearly 14,000 foreign students study in Cuban universities under foreign programs.
