HOLIDAY IN CUBA

by Margaret
(Ottawa, Ontario Canada)

Can you take your dog with you to Cuba for a holiday?
If so, is there anything special you need to know or do. How would you find out which resorts allow you to bring your dog with you?

Answer by Vic Webmaster Havana-guide.com

Yes, you can bring your dog to Cuba, but there's some red tape, read my answer to other visitors

I am not sure of the fact that dogs are allowed in Cuban resorts.
I have never seen dogs in the resorts, but I can imagine that not every guest in the resorts likes the presence of a dog, so it's recommended that you first ask for a written permission of the Resort Management.
If you really want to travel with your dog in Cuba I think it's easier to contact a Casa Particular (private rented rooms for tourists) they are sometimes more flexible.
After all, it will not be an easy experiment, you have to take into account an important loss of time due to additional checks for the dog. Are animals allowed on your plane? Most airlines does not allow animals. Is a special cage required on the plane?

For up-to-date information I recommend that you contact:

  • The Cuban embassy in Canada, for the latest info about veterinarian documents and procedures to enter Cuba.
  • Your airline company to ask if they do transport animals and the procedures and documents needed.
  • Your Resort for a written permission that your dog is allowed in the hotel and on the beaches.
  • The Canadian (health) authorities for the procedures on your return. What (Veterinarian)documents are needed to import your dog back into Canada.
  • At last do you have an insurance for accidents caused by your dog and valid in Cuba? For example: your dog could be the cause of a deadly traffic accident.
