how much money should I take to Cuba

by john
(newcastle england)

hi, I am staying in havana for 3 nights bed and breakfast and then 7 nights all inclusive in Varadero how much money should I bring to spend I am from the uk.

Answer
Hi John,
The rent for a private room (Bed and Breakfast will cost you 30-40 CuC (Peso Convertible).
I guess that you have already paid the all inclusive arrangement before you arrive in Varadero. When you go out to the clubs and disco's
count 30-50 pounds a day. Most cocktails cost 3 cuc most clubs ask a cover charge between 5-10 CUC.
Below my answer I have given to an other Cuba visitor.
Q. How much will I spend in one week, visiting Cuba ?
A. There are two currency systems in Cuba. Firstly there is the "Peso Nacional", the Cuban money system for local use between Cubans, and secondly the "Peso Convertible" (CUC) which is the tourist money. Tourists or foreigners have to use the Peso Convertible. Of course a lot depends on how much you want to spent: for some people 400 to 500 CUC ( +/- 500-600 US$ ) will be sufficient, while others will need 1000 CUC or more. To give you an idea of prices: a beer costs 1,5 CUC, a cocktail 3-4 CUC, a meal in a restaurant between 8 and 12 CUC, a taxi 0.8 to 1CUC / km. It's customary to give a 5% tip in restaurants. Cover charge for a nightclub amounts to 10 - 25 CUC.
Have a nice trip

TAKING MONEY TO CUBA
by: Twyla Vargas

Hello John of New Castle, so you are taking a trip to the beautful Island of Cuba. If you can afford it I would say take as much money as possible. There are so many things of interest in Cuba, that you will want to see them all.
Cuba is not a cheap place to visit. I am from British Overseas Teritory The Cayman Islands, which is very expensive, and after visiting Cuba three times a year for four years, I find that Cuba is just as expensive to me as The Cayman Islands.
Infact the CUC is value the same as the Cayman Dollar to the US 1.20 - 1.24.
When I go to Cuba I stay about one, to two months.
I stay at an apartment where I pay, depending on the season, between 25 to 30 CUD per day.
That does not include meals. Transportation etc.
For me to live comfortable for one month I usually take 3,000. CUC. But I also take alot of teas, green, pepermint and ginger, dried soups, cereals and other snack foods. Pain killers, Antibiotics, peptobismal, antiacid, bandaids, mouthwash, cold medicine and vermox medication. These all are a must. Be prepared to buy bottle water every day to drink. This is very important to do. To enjoy a wonderful Holiday for a week I would say take between 500 to 800 sterling pounds. You will want to spend every cent of it, and if you dont, well you dont have to. Enjoy your trip, and make sure to tell us how it was.
