Hugo Chavez Biography
Hugo Chavez was born on July 28 1954 in Sabaneta, Venezuela. Chavez graduated from the
Military Academy and in 1992 he led a coup against President Carlos Pérez.
The coup failed and Hugo Chávez was sent to prison. After his release many poor
Venezuelans saw him as a figure to oppose the corrupt regime. He founded the left wing
"Fifth Republic Movement" and later the current "United Socialist Party of Venezuela".
In 1998 Chavez was elected president and made legal changes to improve the life
of the poor in Venezuela, such as making access to health care a right.
In collaboration with the Cuban government hundreds of new health centers have been established.
Chavez was reelected as president in 2000 and 2006.
In Latin America Chavez is promoting his Bolivarian Revolution and cooperation among the South
American Nations. Hugo Chávez is a South American leader with a big influence because
of the huge oil wealth of Venezuela.
BOLIVARIAN REVOLUTION
The political ideology of Hugo Chávez is based on the socialist ideas of Simon Bolivar
who is regarded in Latin America as a hero and freedom fighter against the Spanish
Empire. Chávez's
Bolivarian revolution is also influenced by Salvador Allende, Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.
Chavez often refers to
Fidel Castro as his mentor.
HUGO CHAVEZ OIL
Venezuela is a major oil producer. Oil is Venezuela's most important revenue source, accounting for three quarters
of its dollar income. Chávez has used the dividends paid by the state oil company to
increase social budgets. More than 2000 health centers have been opened to help the poor Venezuelans.

Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro agreed on a trade exchange program, Venezuelan oil for Cuban experts
(doctors, nurses, teachers, sports and military trainers and advisors.
The Cuban medical assistance has improved the life of the poor Venezuelans, but it
makes Cuba vulnerable and dependent of the political situation in Venezuela.
