I am looking at spending 3 nights in Havana with my son who is 9. At the moment I am thinking of staying at the NH Parque Central.
I have a few questions:
1. Is this a safe postion for us to go out and explore from the hotel
2. what are the costs for drinks etc in this hotel
3. how much should I budget to spend on trips and meals

The hotel Parque Central situated at a nice square
named Parque Central is a five star hotel and one of the best in Central Havana. I can recommend this hotel. Prices for a beer or a soft drink are 2 Cuc (Peso convertible)(note: 1 Pound Sterling = 1.48 CUC Peso convertible) Cocktails, such as Cuba Libre, Mojito, Daiquiri around 3-5 Cuc. The meals in the Cuban hotels are of less quality than in the private restaurants. In Obispo street near Parque Central you will find several cheap restaurants and affordable prices (6-10 cuc per person) Budget 50-100 cuc per day/person.
Three nights in Havana is a short time to visit the city, for this reason I should focus on visiting Old Havana where the most tourist attractions are, most of this can be done by walking or by taxi (1 cuc/km).Take a ride in a (yellow)COCO taxi, your son will surely enjoy this.

You can also buy guided city trips at the hotel reception desks.
I recommend the city tour bus, departing in front
of the hotel Inglaterra (opposite hotel Parque Central) at 10 cuc (ticket valid one day)

Havana is a safe city, but snatching off a handbag happen like it does in every city. Don't wear expensive jewels, keep a low profile, don't pay with 50 or 100 cuc banknotes. During the day there's a lot of police on the streets, but it's best to avoid at night the side streets around Parque Central (Neptuno street, O'Reilly street, streets around the Capitolio) but to be honest I feel safer in Havana, than in London or New York. Have a nice trip, enjoy Havana!
