Importing electronics in Cuba

by Lori
(USA)

How much will it cost me to import my cell phone and laptop into Cuba? Is there any other fees associated with my visit? I know there is health insurance due them.

Answer by Vic Webmaster:

You can import all your personal belongings without duty (duty free) included your cell phone, laptop, dvd player etc. It depends on which Cuban airport you enter, sometimes you have to sign a document that you will export your laptop back when leaving Cuba. Tourist airports like Varadero are reported to be more flexible, but in general there are no problems. Note that some items are forbidden. It's not allowed to import satelite phones, satelite dishes, GPS systems, fresh foods, plants, seeds, animals, etc. (check the Cuban Customs list) You have to declare to the Cuban customs cash money exceeding 5000 USD.

You have to buy health insurance at immigration.
I recommend to read the Customs regulations

Don't forget you have to pay 25 CUC (25 USD) airport tax (per person) when leaving Cuba.
(This is not included in your plane ticket!)

Hand Held devices
by: Anonymous

What about iPods and play station portables

ANSWER by Vic

Normally with small electronic devices there will be no problems! as long as they are for personal use. Five ipods will not be accepted and will suggest commercial activity. Note that all electronic devices for telecommunications (such as walkie talkies, portable gps systems, satelite phones etc.) are prohibited. read

I am not coming to Cuba as a tourist
by: LG

Most of the talk is for tourists. What about those of us who are coming to Cuba to stay with family. I know of the A-2 family visa. We do not need an OFAC license. But what applies to us that does not apply to tourists?

ANSWER by Vic
Don't play with words in Cuba, replace the word "tourist" by "foreigner". In the Spanish Cuban language (slang) they say it clear, they don't make the distinction between tourist or foreigner, as long as you do not have the Cuban nationality you are a YUMA (foreigner, alien..) subject to Cuban laws and rules when you
enter Cuba. I am sure your family in Cuba can explain the rules.
