Rum events in Cuba

by Josh
(Seattle, Washington, USA)

Does Cuba have any anual rum events such as festivals, tastings, conferences or competitions?

Answer:

There are several rum / tabacco events:

1) each year "Festival del Habano" at the Havana
Convention Hall, a promotional event for distributors, journalists, professionals etc.
2) Bi-anual "La Semana Havana Club" ( Havana Club Week) a contest for the best barman, with a participation of more than 500 top barmen from all over the world held in hotel Nacional de Cuba in Havana. Last year the contest was won by a Dutch bartender. For more details check out the Havana Club website:

3) Ron museum in Old Havana (near the Sierra Maestra Terminal) a guided tour and tastings are possible each day. Possibility to buy the different Havana Club rums.

RUM EVENTS IN CUBA
by: Twyla Vargas

Very Interesting topic, although I do not drink or smoke. However I have tasted some good cooking in Cuba, and would love to see a Cook off, where different restaurants enter the competition with different dishes. There would be a small sampling, whereby you then would be invited to buy from the menu which you felt taste better. Its fun, and all restaurants make a sale. It is a challenge for restaurants to look forward to.

Comment:
Thanks for your comment Twyla, but....
In Cuba there's no problem of skilled people but sometimes there's a lack of supplies. I remember last time in the restaurant Prado y Neptuno (Havana) I ordered a 'spageti bolonesa' because I had eaten several good spageties in this restaurant. To my surprise they couldn't serve the spageti because there was no cheese.
