Sharks in Cuba?

by Joseph

I'm going on vacation to Varadero and Havana. Are there
sharks reported in the waters?

ANSWER by Vic, webmaster havana-guide.com

There are always sharks in the ocean, but I can't find any recorded attacks on divers or swimmers in the Havana or Varadero area.
Most beaches have spotters who will sound an alarm to evacuate the waters. Most common sharks in the Cuban waters are bull sharks, they usualy do not attack, but when provoked they might bite as the Cuban Shark accident shows

In the Santa Lucia Cuba area are Bull Sharks.

The Only Sharks You Will Encounter Are The Human Kind.
by: Alice

Joseph the only sharks you will encounter in Varadero are the human kind.

Jaded by years of tourism you will find the hustlers or 'Jiniteras' as they are also known preying on the tourist.

Female tourists will be pursued by 'Jiniteros', who sometimes work in the resort hotels and who see a tourist as an easy way out of Cuba.

A lot cheaper than the $5,000 or so they would have to fork out for a raft on the black market, and chances of arriving to Miami are less than 50%.

So much easier to hit on a gullible female tourist.

You might also be asked for clothing. Some would have the shirt off your back or the shoes off your feet.

This happened to us when we stayed at a small hotel utside of Varadero. Well fed well dressed rection staff hustled us daily for our dresses, they even knew the particular dress colour etc. They had a prepared shopping list, and were incredibly pushy to the point of being agressive.

One particular woman who served in the coffee bar of this small 2 star hote, was agressive to the point of being obnoxious. She would slam the tips glass down and shout 'Tip' to drunken Russian men, and proceed to hustle them and complain loudly that they were mean and 'drunks' etc. Shaming them into handing over cash.

If you can imagine a certain model who is known for her bad temper who throws phones and assaults staff then this woman culd be her angrier aunt.

A nightmare! Even the management seemed to be scared of her. Too scared to rein in this tyrannical woman.

This is the type of shark you could well encounter.

Izlasul Take Note!.
