Tips given to tourist workers in Cuba - Cuba Tipping

by Jennifer

Cuba Tipping
Do Cuban workers in the restaurants and hotels get to keep all the pesos convertible and the amount that they are worth?

ANSWER: by Vic Webmaster Havana-guide.com

To better understand the situation consider this:
in Cuba it's a privilege to work in the tourist industry. Most of the workers have a recommendation of Party Officials, sometimes functions are even bought because they're very lucrative. The average Cuban salary is 25-30 USD but in the tourist industry, a bar tender, taxi driver or a room maid can make more from their tips and triple their regular income.

Factory workers and farmers gave intense criticism
on the "RICH" earnings in the Cuban tourist industry during the Communist Party Commitees.
For this reason the Cuban Minister of Tourism has decided that all tips must be collected and put in a collective fund and later distributed over the entire staff. So far the theory. I have seen waiters giving their tips to the hotel or bar cashier, but I have my doubts. Cuba is Cuba, who will control the pockets of the barman, room maids etc. the need for money is big and tips are welcome. My guess is that a good portion of the tips will disappear in the pockets of the workers.

by: Well Said Cayman I agree

I agree with what Vic and Cayman have said. Workers in the tourism /hotel industry are spoilt and can be arrogant with tourists, almost expecting tips to be handed over each time.

I recently encountered a very agressive woman who served coffee in a small two star hotel in Varadero.

She had a permananet scowl on her face. If you can imagine Naomi Campbell at her angriest then this woman could be her angrier aunt.

She would especially insult the Russian visitors calling them 'Borracios' and would slam the tips glass in front of them shouting 'Proprios' or 'Tips'.

She told me she had a daughter so I gave her a dress that was too small for me.

She did not even thank me, instead she insulted me calling me 'Indicreto' indiscreet, because I had handed to her in front of a tourist. The tourist in question was not even aware, but she is a bully. 'This is Cuba not Africa' she shouted at me.

I wrote a comment about her in the book but I later noticed the page had been torn out.

Her name is Marlene, she works at Oasis, and if you ever meet this woman do not tip her, she is a nasty piece of work.

So I would take Cayman's advice and give to the really poor the need who are not spoilt like the hotel staff.

GIVING TIPS IN CUBA
by: Cayman Isands

If you can aford to give tips I would say yes. I tip in the Cayman Islands, but I feel it should be granted only if it is earned. If you have a person, not just a hotel waiter, give you good service, I beleve that tip should be given according to the service you receive.
I like tiping the people who I see work very hard nd is not in te tourist industry.
When I am in Cuba, this is what I do. I take a Bici Taxi to take me into the poor areas. Here I see Shack homes, with broken roofs and doors. Children that are waring tattered clothing and old people hungry. I seclect a few houses, exchange a few words, observe their living conditions, give to each home 20.00 CUC Some times I select five ot ten homes. I say good by nd I am gone until next time.
I am left feeling happy becuse I know the children and elderly had hot meal.
I also visit small country churches and give to them also.
I feel much happier doing this than giving some hotel waiter who is getting tips all day/
So next time you visit Cuba, help the poor. I am very sure tat ou will be Blessed.
I will be going to Cuba shortly. I will not be taking any designer clothes or ipods. I will be going to assist a poor family get a Bathroom wit running water to shower and use the other facilities. That family has been sleeping on a mattress that belonged to three generations, dont you think they deserve new one?.
It is impossible to help every one, but you can begin with one family. Try it and be blessed.
