US Embargo on Cuba

by Sandra
(New Brunswiick)

What Effect Will The Lifting Of The Embargo Have On Cuba?

I have read that Obama is planning to lift the Cuban Embargo soon.
I'm having mixed feelings on this.
While it will make life better economically for the average Cuba I hate the thought of the millions of chubby American tourists flooding in, looking for Burger King, Starbucks Walmart and Pizza Hut.

God help us!.
Will this historic moment change then face of Cuba forever? and how much of a change will their government allow do you think.

A good point will be that it will wipe out the opportunity for those fat ugly middle aged women to be so angry when their toy boys disappear as soon as his papers arrive.

What else do these stupid old women expect?.
That a handsome 25 year old Cuban man would actually really love them and stay with them for life after they have purchased him for $5,000 Canadian dollars.

Dream on woman!. :)
Hopefully the lifting of the embargo will put a stop to all of the prostitution and pimping that we see now.

I was disgusted to see a pimp screaming at a girl (no older than 15) when we were in Havana two months ago.

We tried to intervene and attract the attention of the tourist police but the thug was brazen and turned on us. he did not see to care.
And the tourist as you know is always wrong in Cuba. You dare not attack anything expecially if it effects in any way their $Multi Billion tourism industry.

But the pimps are usng younger and younger girls so hopefully a better economy will do away with their evil trade and the girls can return to education and alternative work.

The ugly old chubbies from Canada will now have to look elsewhere for handsome young toy boy to purchase.
I hear the Dominican Republic does a roaring trade in sex tourism.

I do not expect much change. Trade between the US and Cuba will expand, but the US is already an important food provider. The Cuban authorities are smart enough to handle a flood of future US tourists. No one in Cuba want to return to the situation before the revolution, when the US Maffia with Meyer Lansky ruled Havana, casinos, gambling, prostitution were part of the daily life. Havana had over 14,000 prostitutes at that time. Cubans will be friendly to American tourists, but I guess that they will limit the numbers of tourists in case of problems.
Prostitution is prohibited by law in Cuba. Police control is very strict. First time caught they get a 50cuc fine, second time they are sent to a re-education camp to learn a trade.
The control is very strict but you can't control every street corner.
In many developing countries the situation is worse than in Cuba. Thailand, Philippines, Haiti, Roumania, Africa, have a record of child prositution.
I think that the importance of the lifting is overrated, Cuba need to build a stronger economy
and pay their workers a decent salary. With a salary of 12 dollar, there is no purchasing power. With a decent income prostitution wiil disappear.
