What are the potential health risks in Cuba?

Answer by Vic, webmaster Havana-guide.com

In general Cuba has a good reputation in health care. Most tourists can travel to Cuba without special precautions.
Some sources recommend vacination shots for Hepatitis A and B, and H1N1-flu (Swine Flu or Mexican Flu)
Some minor health risks are Dengue fever, this is an illness like flu caused by Aedes mosquitoes. The Cuban goverment has reacted with an intensive campaign to control the mosquito population.(fumigation measures) The risk is under control.
Aids/HIV is a growing problem in Cuba, the use of condoms is strongly recommended.
For the average tourist, travellers diarrhea will be be the main concern. It's recommended to bring anti-diarrhea and antibiotics to Cuba as a preventive measure. Avoid drinking tap water, always drink bottled water.

MORE ON HEALTH RISKS IN CUBA
by: Cayman Islands

I would strongly suggest, that when travelling to Cuba, travellers consider taking along their medicines, also it would be recommended to take pain killers, antibotics, cold and flu medicines. Taking medication for pin worms, thread worms, head lice and ring worms is a must. Dont forget to take Detol soaps and liquid to bathe with. Lots of hygene necessities are required.
PLEASE DO NOT DRINK THE WATER, IT WILL MAKE OU VERY SICK, ENOUGH TO SEE A DOCTOR.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE CHANCES IN HAVING SEX WITHOUT USING CONDOMS. BECAREFUL ABOUT ORAL SEX,YOU CAN BE GIVEN HERPES AND OTHER VIRUSES.
Cuba is a beautiful place but you have to exercise caution about health issues. You have only one life, please do not throw it away cheaply. Walk good.
