Which Cuban ruler did Fidel Castro overthrow?

What was the name of the ruler in Cuba before Fidel Castro and how and why was the regime overthrown.

A young Cuban army sergant Fulgenio Basista backed by the United States
led a military coup against president Geraldo Machado. The new Cuban president
Batista became a much hated and cruel dictator in Cuba. A period of poverty for the average
Cubans, corruption, torture and murder began. The mafia was King in Cuba, gambling
and prostitution were everywhere.
The brutal suppresion and poverty was a fertile soil for an uprising and revolution led by
by Fidel Castro.
The Cuban revolution started with an attack on the Mocada Barracks. After a guerilla war
Fidel Castro and Che Guevara conquered Havana.
Dictator Batista fled to the Dominican Republic after stealing a plane load of gold from
the Cuban National Bank. Read more
